In general we recommend that a consultant supervisor is nominated to oversee your project. This helps to formalize the project and in particular facilitates your application for ethics approval. The consultant supervisor will need to provide a summary of his CV for this purpose.
In some situations, ethics approval for a study may be given to a chief investigator who is not a consultant. The applicant will need to provide evidence that they can act in this capacity (e.g. by demonstrating previous experience in research particularly as a chief or principle investigator).

I would add that, if you don’t have an interested consultant in your local hospital then we can often put you in touch with someone who has an interest in the area and would be willing to help you.
