This project aimed to investigate the quality of care given to emergency general surgical patients on their admission to hospital. Nick developed a list of core processes of care for emergency surgical admissions, using qualitative interviews and the Delphi consensus methodology. ESAP set out to measure the quality of care in hospitals, using these processes and correlate with patient outcomes.
Data collection for this study is now complete at St. Mary’s, Hillingdon, Basildon, The Royal London and Homerton Hospitals and about 320 patients were included in total. If successful, this tool could be used to show if a simple intervention, such as providing clinical guidelines improves the delivery of care in these hospitals.
