Invitation from STARSurg…
We write to you on behalf of the Student Audit & Research in Surgery (STARSurg) collaborative, a network of motivated, surgically-minded medical students and surgical trainees from across the UK and Ireland.
We would like to invite you to participate in our third annual national, student-led, multi-centre study: the OAKS Study – Outcomes After Kidney injury in Surgery. A student-led audit of acute kidney injury following major gastrointestinal surgery.
Collaborative networks have transformed surgical research across the UK. Our first study saw over 250 medical students collect data on 1500 colonic resections from 109 centres in the UK. Each student team was only required to input two-weeks of patient data for PubMed indexed co-authorship. The findings of the study were published in the British Journal of Surgery, Europe’s premier surgical journal (IF: 4.8) (available: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=starsurg).
Participation in this study requires commitment and enthusiasm. Each mini team is formed of 2 medical students and 1 doctor. You will be responsible for formation of teams and gaining approval at your local hospital.
You will then be required to proactively collect data for a short two-week period between 23rd September and 18th November 2015. Again, all collaborators who successfully collect data will be acknowledged as PubMed citable authors.
The primary aim of the OAKS Study is to audit adherence to guidelines requiring assessment of renal function before and after major gastrointestinal and liver surgery.
The study period is intentionally short. Each collaborator will upload a small amount of local data, which cumulatively will lead to a substantial national database, with high external validity. Collaborators will be encouraged to present their local data findings to governance meetings, bolstering their own personal portfolio.
With Warm Regards,
