This is your chance to join a NATIONAL audit and get on this major collaborative project. Already over 120 sites across the UK are on board for the NASBO: National Audit of Small Bowel Obstruction . However the above sites are not yet signed up. But hurry – you have only until 15th December.
Emergency surgery and nutrition are two areas often neglected in the surgical literature. Laparotomy for small bowel obstruction accounted for 49% of all surgical interventions in the first NELA report. There is also heterogeneity in these patients, as some have clear indications for early intervention, others may be managed successfully with a conservative approach, and some may pass from the conservative to operative group.
This audit aims to assess outcomes and impact of guidelines for malnourished patients in small bowel obstruction. This is essentially an 8 week prospective audit running from Jan 2017. It will capture the pathway for patients treated for SBO, something NELA is unable to do as many are managed non-operatively.
